Bear’s Birth Stone carries in its bronze chains a handbreadth of the mythical “väki”, the strength of Bear, the Forest's Apple.
Inscribed on this stone are a few lines from old spell-poems that were passed from generation to generation, part of the rich oral tradition of Finland, and pictures inspired by rock carvings and rune stones found in Scandinavia.
The official translation of the inscription tells us how:
“Honey-paw was born in ether
In the regions of the Moon-land
On the shoulders of Otava”
“Otava” means the constellation Ursa Majoris or “the big bear”.
The inscription is carved in stone in runic script and painted with red ochre. The rune stone is bound with brass bonds to a sprig of larch. There are also pieces of Baltic amber, moukaite and bone on ends of the bronze chain.
Runes are an ancient alphabet, that was used for writing, divination, protection and magic. They were used throughout northern Europe, Scandinavia, the British Isles, and Iceland from about 100 B.C.E. to 1600 C.E and then forgotten for nearly 300 years.
